Anzac Day Reflections:

Why Veteran Health Deserves More Than One Day of Recognition

Each year on 25 April, Australians pause to reflect on the service and sacrifice of our veterans. Anzac Day is a time to remember not only those who fought at Gallipoli, but all men and women who have worn the uniform in service of our nation.

Anzac Day
Anzac Day Lest We Forget

It’s a day that brings communities together - veterans, families, and the wider public - to commemorate, reflect, and show respect. But while the ceremonies and parades are important, the reality is that many veterans live with the impacts of their service every day, long after the bugle calls have faded.

At Provocatus, we believe veteran health deserves more than one day of recognition each year. It deserves year-round attention, care, and action.

For many veterans, Anzac Day holds deep personal meaning. Nigel McIntosh, our Registered Nurse, Educator and Veteran Access Scheme™ Clinical Care Manager at Provocatus, shares his reflections.

"Anzac Day reminds me of the mateship we share — but it also makes me think about the struggles many of us still face once the ceremony is over."

"A lot of veterans aren’t just dealing with physical injuries — they're navigating mental health issues, adjustment to civilian life, and seeking new purpose. It's not always visible, but it's a very real concern for many of us."

Today, Nigel works closely with veterans, helping them navigate primary healthcare and the DVA system(s); he sees first-hand the challenges they continue to face well beyond Anzac Day. While Anzac Day shines a spotlight on veterans’ sacrifices, the health challenges many live with don’t end when the ceremonies do.
