Osteoarthritis
Information for Veterans and First Responders
What is Osteoarthritis?
Living with persistent joint pain or stiffness can be challenging, particularly for veterans and first responders who have often faced physically demanding roles during their service.
Osteoarthritis, commonly referred to as wear-and-tear arthritis, is a degenerative joint condition where the cartilage cushioning the ends of bones gradually deteriorates. It can lead to chronic pain, reduced mobility, and significant impacts on daily life and overall well-being.
As a veteran-owned and operated company, we understand the unique health challenges faced by veterans and first responders. This page provides an overview of osteoarthritis, its symptoms, and treatment options, as well as resources for accessing support.
Symptoms of Osteoarthritis
Common osteoarthritis symptoms include:
Joint pain during or after movement.
Stiffness, particularly after periods of inactivity.
Swelling or tenderness around the affected joint.
Loss of flexibility and limited range of motion.
A grating sensation when moving the joint.
In some cases, osteoarthritis can lead to the development of bone spurs and chronic inflammation. Symptoms often worsen with prolonged activity or as part of the natural aging process.
Diagnosis and Treatment of Osteoarthritis
Diagnosis
Diagnosing osteoarthritis involves:
Consulting with your GP to assess symptoms.
Physical examinations to evaluate joint mobility.
Imaging tests, such as X-rays or MRIs, to detect cartilage loss and bone changes.
These steps are critical in determining the severity of the condition and creating an effective treatment plan.
Treatment Options
Treatment for osteoarthritis focuses on symptom management and improving joint function, including:
Conservative Approaches
Medications
Physical therapy
Lifestyle adjustments
Advanced interventions via surgical procedures

Veterans and first responders with Osteoarthritis
Veterans and first responders are at an increased risk of developing osteoarthritis due to the physical demands, repetitive stress, and injuries associated with their roles.
Recognising this, the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) may provide support and compensation to eligible veterans diagnosed with service-related osteoarthritis. Eligible veterans may be able to access treatment through programs like the Provisional Access to Medical Treatment (PAMT) while claims are processed.
